How Hockeyora predicts a game

Every team gets an attack and a defence rating from this season's games in regulation. Recent games count for more, and every result is adjusted for the strength of the opponent, so a win against a top team moves a rating more than a win against the last-placed one. Each league also has its own measured home-ice edge.

From those ratings the model works out how many goals each team should score and, with a Poisson model, the chance of every score after 60 minutes. Hockey ends level after regulation more often than that simple model expects, so ties get the share each league really shows, and every tie is then split into an overtime or shootout win. Where bookmakers price a game, the model is blended with their consensus, which carries late news such as the starting goalie.

Reading today's picks

Each game in the list shows the team the model backs and how likely it is to win, overtime and shootout included. Hockey favourites rarely pass 75%: one bounce or one hot goalie decides many games. Above 65% is a strong pick, 57% to 65% a lean, and under 57% close to a coin flip.

The game page goes further: the regulation result (the three-way market), the puck line and total goals picks, the tale of the tape, recent form, the score by period, head-to-head games, each team's leading scorers and a written analysis. Predictions are published up to three days before the face-off and keep updating until the game starts.

Our record, in public

Every pick is settled after the final buzzer and counted on the accuracy page, by competition and by confidence, so anyone can check how the model is doing. Before launch the model was also tested on a full past season in every league, predicting each game only from the games before it, and that test is published beside the simple rules it has to beat, such as always backing the home team.

Predictions are estimates, not guarantees. If you bet, set a budget first and treat the picks as one opinion among others.

hockey predictions: questions

Is Hockeyora a bookmaker?
No. Hockeyora does not take bets. It publishes predictions and shows the market odds next to them, without sending you to a particular bookmaker.
Does the win probability include overtime?
Yes. The headline pick is the moneyline: who wins the game, overtime and shootout included. The chance of a win inside 60 minutes is the regulation result (the three-way market with the draw), shown on every game page.
Which picks are free?
Three games a day are fully unlocked for everyone: the puck line and total goals picks, every market and the full analysis, not just the winner. They are listed on the free picks page and marked on their game pages.
How accurate are the hockey predictions?
Every pick is settled in public on the accuracy page, by competition and by confidence, so the record can be checked game by game.
When are hockey predictions published?
Up to 3 days before the face-off. Each prediction is updated as the betting market moves, until the game starts.
What do the puck line and the total mean?
The puck line is hockey's handicap: −1.5 means the favourite has to win by two goals or more, +1.5 that the underdog covers if it wins or loses by one. A win after overtime or a shootout is always by one goal. The total is the number of goals both teams score together, overtime included and a shootout counted as one goal; the over/under pick says whether the game should finish above or below the line.
Are the hockey predictions free?
Yes. The win probability, projected score, puck line and total goals of every hockey game are free to read, with no sign-up.
How are the predictions made?
Each team gets attack and defence ratings from this season's games in regulation, weighted toward recent form and adjusted for the opponents faced, plus a home-ice edge measured for each league. A Poisson model turns them into the chance of every score, ties go to overtime and the shootout, and where bookmakers price a game the model is blended with their consensus.
